On Thursday, April 4th our guest speaker was Robert Bowden, Director of Leu Gardens. He spoke to us about trees, perennials, shrubs, and vines that are insect and disease free, and are new and under utilized plants for the Florida landscape. He shared that these are plants that are not usually found at local gardening shops but some can be found online and ALL of these plants can be found at Leu Gardens. He encouraged anyone trying to locate a source for one of these plants to contact Leu Gardens for help. He talked about the specialty gardens at Leu Gardens – the Bog Garden, the Butterfly Garden, the Children’s Garden, the Accessible Garden, and the Rose Garden.
The Rose Garden is being redone reducing the number of different rose varieties to 16 – those types of roses most easily grown in Florida. He brought 2 passes to Leu Gardens that were included in our monthly raffle of door prizes and they were won by Linda and Sylvia. The notes below were provided by Cheryl Samarjia and Lee Breedlove and should give you some idea of the wide range of plants presented by Mr. Bowden. He is a very knowledgeable and entertaining speaker and we thoroughly enjoyed his presentation.
