7th Grade Science Rockets- Launch Rockets

On Friday, April 13, 2018, the 7th Grade Science students will Launch Rockets they built in their science class. This science made fun by launching rockets was made possible by a GREAT Teach in Speaker, Adam Nehr, who was a former NASA Engineer and Mr. Jones, the 7th grade Science Teacher.

Adam had volunteered to come speak to Mr. Jones’s Science classes and he mesmerized his students (and Mr. Jones) with the stories of Rockets, his Mars research in the Antarctic and more! It also turns out that Adam is the President of a local Amateur Rocket Club, which inspired Mr. Jones to begin planning for his students to launch their own rockets. Adam and Mr. Jones put together an idea of what this would look like and then the search for funding began. Mr. Jones reached out to a few local Tech and Engineering Companies to see if they would sponsor the rockets and engines.

However, it was Ms. Grainger who found a connection (Thanks to Ms. Grainger) to set things in order. A Donors Choose (a great way for anyone to help sponsor a school or classroom project) grant was established and immediately funded by local sponsors.)

Next, Adam and his wife Barbara came into the science classes and built rockets with Mr. Jones’ students. A launch date was set, but we were in a “Purple fire readiness” and had to cancel. A new date was set and the rains came. Adam and Barb came out the week of the launch and prepped the rockets for launch. Then on April 13th, Adam brought out his truck – A two-man Mission Control that allows him to launch exactly the way they launch big rockets at NASA! Adam and Barb’s commitment to rockets and students is amazing. A big thanks to EVERYONE who made this possible. We hope to make this an annual event. And a big thanks to our principal, Mrs. Stevens for allowing us to make education fun by allowing us to “color outside the lines”!
