With the hurricane season now upon us here is some general information on use of contractors to make after storm repairs.
Use a licensed contractor to perform a service that requires a state license. Unlicensed contractors prey on the victims of hurricanes. During a declared state of emergency, the penalty for unlicensed construction activity is a third-degree felony.
Construction Trades Requiring a State License:
• Air-Conditioning • Building Contractor • Electrician • General Contractor • Home Inspection • Mold-related Services • Plumber • Pool/Spa • Roofer • Sheet Metal • Solar
Services That Do Not Require a License:
• Cleanup Services • Trimming/Removing a Fallen Tree • Removing Debris • Placing a Tarp on a Roof
Verify the contractor’s license: Contractors must include their license number on all advertising, including their business cards. You can verify a contractor’s name or license number by visiting myfloridalicense.com or calling (850) 487-1395, Ext. 110. When verifying a license, make sure the license is active.
Request estimates from more than one contractor: (This is good to do anytime, not just post-storm).
Check the references for each contractor.
Do not sign a contract, make a payment, or provide personal or financial information to a contractor on the spot.
Always get everything in writing to include a thorough description of work to be completed, the total cost of the repairs, and a projected date of completion.
