APRIL YARD OF THE MONTH

April’s winners are Tom and Linda Smallwood, 20485 Netherland on the golf course in between Babbitt and Albion.

Tom and Linda Smallwood, 20485 Netherland st | May 2018 Yard of the MonthThe Yard of the Month Committee for April had a very easy decision, in spite of the fact that so many yards, trees, and shrubs sustained damage in the past 7 or 8 months from Hurricane Irma, drought, and damaging freezes. As soon as we saw the beautiful landscaping and lush green lawn, we knew Tom and Linda Smallwood’s property at 20485 Netherland was our winner. As luck would have it, Tom was arriving after taking their dog for a walk when we drove up to ask if they would allow us to take some photos of their property. When you approach this property from the street, the first thing you notice is the beautiful geraniums in pots near the front door and the 3 beautiful tall palm trees with a fountain sculpture beneath them. In addition, there were blooming bougainvillea and Mexican petunias growing among the azaleas. Tom explained that their fire bush (2 of them) had taken a serious hit from the freezes earlier this year but were now coming back.

Tom and Linda have lived in Wedgefield for 25 years and at this address for 15 years. They moved here from Michigan and admit that they don’t miss the snow. They, like their neighbors on this street, enjoy the company of Petey, their resident peacock. Petey arrived as we were taking photos of the property.

There were several beautiful yards in this area that deserve honorable mention: 2642 Ballard (2nd choice by the committee), 20722 Melville (beautiful waterfall fountain and flower gardens), 2660 Babbitt (lots of colorful flowering plants in colorful pots), 2406 Abalone, 2659 Abbey, 20392 Nettleton and 20430 Maxim all had nicely landscaped and maintained yards.
