WEDGEFIELD GREEN THUMB GARDEN CLUB – January 2017

When the Garden Club met on January 5th, our presenter, Lee Breedlove taught us about cacti (plural for cactus).

The first prickly fact is that all cacti are succulents but not all succulents are cacti: These sticky little plants enjoy a lot of sun and can survive excessive rain or dryness. Thus they were name from ancient Greek and roman words. Such a prickly example is the Fish Hook Cactus which means ferocious in Latin. Its spines have been used for fishing and for serving.

Another prickly mystery is than many cacti will cease active growth during drastic weather conditions, such as the Barrel Cactus. Many of these sticky Florida friendly plants have colorful flowers; they also can be started from cuttings or seeds.

Our next meeting will be on Groundhog Day at the Wedgefield Clubhouse. The speaker will be Ed Thralls from the Orange County Extension Agency. He will discuss and give handouts about plantings for spring (which begins on March 20th.

Those who won door prizes in January were Dulce Rodriguez, Ruth Oliver, Norms Hallberg, Janis Thaw and Alma Hardy.
