Our beautiful pumpkin, Sylvia Cox, gave an informative, fun, and generous presentation of perennial plants. She discussed mums, marigolds, purslane, lantana, pentas, and Mexican heather.
The plants were given away as door prizes to Dulce Rodriguez, Heather Crowley, Adelaide Cantania, Linda Alberico, Karen Syed, Norma Hallberg, Kathy Bruce, and Ruth Oliver. Sylvia played games with us to determine who would receive these plants. Ms Pumpkin also asked us all what our favorite plants is and why! Mums mean fidelity, optimum joy, and a long life.
Chrysanthemums are sometimes called mums. They are native to Asia and Northwestern Europe. There is no need to fertilize them their first year; deadheading them continues their bloom. Mums bloom late summer through the fall-water them 5-7 hours weekly. Marigolds are a perennial flower which blooms in the summer and through the fall. Mosquitoes hate mums. They have few problems with insects or pests. They may be planted between your tomatoes to dissuade bugs. They are the first plants or seed to be planted in and spring and the last to stop blooming. These cheerful flowers are easy to grow. Marigolds come in a variety of heights and assorted colors of red, orange, and yellow. Lantana needs eight hours of daily sun: it can be treated as an annual or perennial. It is a beautiful, easy to grow garden plant. It is tough, drought tolerant, and attracts butterflies.
All of the Garden Club Pumpkins will be back next month.
