WEDGEFIELD GREEN THUMB GARDEN CLUB

Recently we announced a change of time and day; the current correct information is we will meet the first Thursday of the month at 11:00 a.m. in the Game Room at the Clubhouse.
In August when the days are hot….I like to find a shady spot …..And hardly move a single bit…..and sit, and sit and sit….

The team of presenters did not SIT; the team was Adelaide Cantania, Shirley Hagan, and Kathy Bruce. Their topics were starting plants and making compost. Adelaide began with a hand out describing the plants and herbs they started and gave away as door prizes to all who were there (14 of us)! Plus a beautiful peace lily in a ceramic pot. African Iris grows in the full sun and can grow up to 4 feet tall. It flowers in spring, summer, and fall. One should fertilize them every 6 weeks with 4 in 1 all purpose fertilizer 10-2-12. This team recommends the fertilizer from Lukas Nursery. Ornamental oregano is NOT edible and grows in full sun. One can grow it in a pot or hanging basket. Feed oregano with Miracle Gro every 6 weeks. It grows easily from cuttings. Another favorite is Vinca; vinca grows in full sun to about 24 inches in height. It grows new plants by itself. Feed with 4 in 1 fertilizer every 6 weeks. The Jatropha Tree grows in full sun to a height of 8-10 feet. It flowers in spring, summer, and fall. Jatropha should be fertilized every 6 weeks with 4 in 1. To propagate: cut the branches and let them sit in water a few hours. Then plant them in a mixture of soil and good compost. Water daily until new growth is observed (about 3 weeks). Then you may water as needed.

Another proof that this team does not sit is their following compost recipe. Utilize a big bucket with drainage holes, a small amount of good soil, kitchen scraps (Adelaide doesn’t use garlic, onion, or citrus). Turn it over once a week with a shovel. A food processor can be used to pulverize kitchen scraps when you are trying to speed up the process. Starting some tomatoes? Add Doritos to the soil; in three weeks the tomatoes should be flourishing. When harvesting tomatoes you may wash them well and throw them in a freezer bag in the freezer for as long as a year. Normally, tomatoes do not get washed or refrigerated until you are ready to use them. Parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme were given to all by this team that does not sit. Additional give a ways were Porterweed starters from Linda Alberico and avocado seeds by Ruth Oliver. In September. Heather Crowley will give a program on air plants. Heather is a Master Gardener.
