With ownership of a pet comes great responsibility. This responsibility includes rabies vaccinations, proper shelter and confinement, food and water, medical attention, and other responsibilities. Responsibilities that are discussed in Florida Statute XLV, Chapter 767, and Orange County, Florida Code of Ordinances, Chapter 5, all of which discuss animal services, leash laws, owner responsibility, and punitive repercussions.

Within the past few months in our beautiful Wedgefield community, there have been a few reported incidents with pets escaping their homes for a variety of reasons. A couple of these pets have been identified as aggressive, and or multiple “escape artist” offenders. Florida Law requires that owners are to maintain control of their pets, always. Orange County and Florida Statute lay foundations to show that dogs off owner property and not secured on a leash will be considered at large. At large pets are subject to owner violation and citation/fining.

We have such a beautiful community, and I am always tickled when I see neighbors jumping in to help other neighbors. However, this is a situation in which some pet owners need to step up and take a little responsibility. Pet walking responsibility applies in our community as well, take a bag to immediately remove any feces deposited by a dog in your custody. Not all pet owners fall in this category! This is a call to just let our community know that the pets (dogs and cats) in our community deserve the best care. If you are ever unsure of what to do about an animal situation, please call 311, or review the FAQs on the Orange County Florida website. If you have lost your pet or found a pet, please check our local Wedgefield group on Facebook at Wedgefield Lost and Found Pets, then the Orange County Animal Control website. See something, say something. Let’s make Wedgefield sidewalks safe to walk again, and keep pets safe in their own yards!
