After a decade of waiting and months of protests from neighbors, a new school in east Orange County’s Wedgefield community opens its doors Monday.
Parents have asked for a school in Wedgefield for years, saying their children have endured long bus rides to crowded schools. Opponents countered that a large school was incongruous with their rural surroundings.
But the resistance has waned, school officials say. When Orange students return to class Monday, the Wedgefield School will have space for 1,200 students in kindergarten through eighth grade.
“I think it’s going to be great for the community,” said Sonia Franklin, whose two children will attend Wedgefield.
