WELCOME TO WEDGEFIELD - A Deed Restricted Community

Green Thumb Garden Club – December 2016

green_thumb_garden_clubSanta’s Elves came to visit the Wedgefield Green Thumb Garden Club with gift suggestions galore: containers and plants needed to fill them.  Elf Keri was invited by a Wedgefield Elf, Heather Cowley.  Those in attendance learned the following ideas.

All containers must have holes in their bottom to allow for drainage.  Those who take to this idea may want to pay attention to the width and depth of these containers in relation to what you plant.  You may want to place a container without a plant in it to continue a color scheme.  Our Elf visitor suggested you think big:  add color to your landscape, repeat the  plant or the pot. Pay attention to the light and water needs of what you put in the container and be aware of whether or not the plants will be able to root into the ground  (if you want them to).  As you are maintaining or replacing the plants remember to maintain the scale, color, and texture of the originals.

Container Scaping “recipes” include single plants, contrasting plants, and the classic filler/thriller/spiller design.  Green Thumbers can triple the height of the size of these gift item containers.  Suggestions for plants are bromeliads, sansevieria, agave, foxtail ferns, small bird of paradise, and ZZ.  Elf Keri works for the City of Orlando at Leu Gardens;  her contact information is Keri Byrum keri.byrum @city of Orlando.net or www.leugardends.org or MissSmartyPlants.com.

During Christmas, all the Elves at Leu Gardens will welcome visitors to the Leu House which is decorated for the season (some items will be for sale).  Additionally camellias will be blooming.  In January, a Dinosaur Invasion will begin and last through April 30.  A special Dino-Day will be on Jan. 28 and it has been designed as a family experience!

Green Thumb Elves want to remind all residents that the Yard of the Month Program is suspended during the months of Nov.-March. We continue to be mindful of watering restrictions and the slower growing season.  Thanks again to the Santas at Zaxby’s for supporting this program.

Elf Heather presented door prizes to Connie Shepherd, Shirley Hagan, Martha Bradford, Kathy Bruce, Head Elf Janis Thaw, Alma Hardy, Adelaide Cantania, and Brenda Higgins.  There will be no meeting in December as we will be enjoying the hospitality of Mr. and Mrs. Claus (M/M Cantania) for our annual Christmas party.
