Firewise June 2016

firewiseSpring is in full bloom. Weather during an El Nino year can be unpredictable. Thankfully, we received some much needed rain in early May. As the hot part of the year approaches, continuous weekly rainfall is what we need to prevent a severe fire season. While doing spring chores, please consider removing dead brush from around structures and cleaning pine straw debris from gutters. Soffits should be screened to prevent embers/firebrands from blowing into attics.

The next event for Wedgefield Firewise is the Cattleman’s Breakfast, on June 25th , 6:30 to 10:00 AM. Breakfast is always great and you don’t have to travel far. The Cattleman’s Breakfast is at Highway 50 and 419 in the Tractor Supply parking area.

National Arson Awareness was celebrated May 1st through the 7th. This year’s goal was to “Spread the Facts Not the Fire”.  FEMA reports that 25% of all Wildland Fires, occurring 2010-  2014 were ruled Arson.

Never confront an Arson Suspect, instead, call 911 and relay description of any suspicious activity. The Arson Tip Line is 1-877-662-7766. For more information about Arson visit www.usfa.FEMA.gov/aaw.
