Wedgefield’s CERT team volunteered again this year to work at the Hurricane Expo. The event was held in the gym at Cypress Springs High School. Compared to previous years, parking was a breeze thanks to 1,000 parking spaces. The members directed traffic, ran shuttle service for the handicapped and elderly, manned the CERT table and anything else that was needed. Give a big thanks to Mike Nolan, Nancy Adams, Jean & Mark McHayle, Linda Alberico, Phil & Helen Unser. Saturday, June 16th the team met in the Mansfield Park for training. Equipment was pulled from the storage room, taken to the area planned to be used in the event of a Hurricane or other disaster and set up. They practiced raising tents, setting up cots and chairs, checking medical supplies etc. and making a list of items still needed. The task of moving the equipment was made easier thanks to the wagons given to the team by the Office of Emergency Management. That brings up a very sad note: On June 14th, just days after the Hurricane Expo, Ron Plummer, Manager of Orange County’s Office of Emergency Management (OEM) passed away suddenly. Ron was a friend of the Wedgefield CERT and was instrumental in our team receiving much of the equipment we have. Ron will be missed.
