Community Emergency Response Team
BE
PREPARED - C.E.R.T. Program

On Monday, April 9th, the CERT training
began. LT. Dave Waite OCFD (ret.) introduced Instructors
Lance Hillard and Danny Wambold from Orange County Fire
and Rescue Department to the attendees. LT. Waite
presented an over view of the hands on training that
will be given during the month. Forty three volunteers
signed up for the training which will take 30 hours
(broken into sessions). Volunteers will be trained to
work as a team in the event of an emergency to handle
various situations such as Disaster Medical Operations
(assessment, treatment of injured residents); Fire
Suppression; CPR/AED; Light Search and Rescue. Disaster
preparedness is crucial due to the fact that in the
event of a disaster; i.e. hurricane or tornado, the Fire
Department and Sheriff's Office may not be able to reach
Wedgefield for hours or even days, depending on the
needs in other areas of the County.
For the volunteers who were unable to attend the Kick
Off meeting and others who want to volunteer, the next
training session will take place on Monday, April 16th
from 6:00PM to 10:00PM at the Wedgefield Clubhouse.

Instructor Bio: Dave Waite
BIO: Dave Waite, Lieutenant, Orange County Fire
Rescue Department, Retired Volunteer CERT Coordinator,
Office of Emergency, Orange County Fire service career
spans 35 years of service in the Orange County Fire
Rescue Department. I have held the positions of
Firefighter, Engineer (Driver) and Lieutenant during the
course of my career. As a Lieutenant, I spent 17 years
in field operations where I was in command of multiple
fire and rescue operations as well incidents in high
rise buildings.
During
my last 7 years I transferred to Headquarters and worked
for the Division Chief of Operations for 6 months and
was then called upon to work directly for the Fire Chief
on any and all projects that he deemed important. (Thus
the emergence of gray hair.) I took part in the 2004
Hurricanes working both in the EOC and in Senior Staff
Meetings which included the heads of all the County
Divisions, the Mayor and County Administrator to bring a
plan together to take care of the citizens and clean up
Orange County from the debris left behind from Hurricane
Charley.
Vision
for Wedgefield CERT team
I have
volunteered to help Orange County Office of Emergency
Management with taking CERT to a new level in training
and efficiency. One of my priorities is to help
communities form their teams with specific people doing
specific jobs to accomplish the fastest and most
efficient way to recover from a natural disaster. In
order to do this the proper placement of team members is
critical and "Incident Command" must be a priority to
ensure the safety of all CERT team members. Once these
two items have been accomplished and all CERT training
has been completed, the Wedgefield CERT team will be one
of the most efficient teams in Orange County if not the
nation and will get a chance to prove it during an
exercise that takes place in your own community.
Thank
You
